I once stood right next to someone who had just poured her heart and soul into writing an essay and excitedly shared it with someone else, only to have her grammar and punctuation harshly criticized right off the bat and her message completely ignored.
It broke my heart to see her enthusiasm and joy for what she had crafted get so quickly extinguished. I’m all for good grammar, but when someone has worked hard to put something into writing and shares it with others, I believe they should be celebrated and heard! I know everybody makes mistakes and that nobody’s perfect. You’re important, and what you have to say is important. You should never be made to feel bad just because you didn’t type something out perfectly. So when we work together, yes, I’ll probably spot your typos. But I won’t be condescending or make you feel bad for having them! |
